Q: What is hypnosis?
A: Hypnosis is a natural, yet altered, state of consciousness. We
all experience "trance" states on a regular basis, naturally. You
have probably had the experience of realizing that you do not
remember the last few miles while driving. You are also
certainly familiar with what it is like to be in the "twilight zone"
(hypnogogic state) as you fall asleep and wake up naturally (without an
alarm). These are two examples of types of trance states that occur
naturally to all of us. Hypnosis that is induced during normal
waking consciousness is characterized by a profound state of
relaxation, emotionalized desire, and hyper-suggestibility. Let's
take a look at what this all means.
-
Profound relaxation - The extraordinary quality of physical and emotional relaxation experienced in hypnosis is not found in any other process. Accumulated stress on all levels is discharged during hypnotic trance, and the systems of the body and mind rejuvenate and balance their functions naturally, much like during deep sleep.
-
Emotionalized desire to satisfy the suggested behavior. When used properly, hypnosis can help you feel more like doing what you need to do to achieve your desired goals.
-
Hyper-suggestibility is a heightened responsiveness to positive suggestions. This stimulates action and helps to "reprogram" old limiting and negative thought patterns to bring about positive change.
Q: Can I be "programmed" to do
or believe things I don't want to while in trance?
A: No. While suggestibility is increased during trance, you cannot
be made to do or believe anything that is against your will or moral
beliefs. Only ideas and beliefs presented during
hypnosis that you choose to accept are effective.
While hypnosis provides an excellent means of "reprogramming"
self-limiting beliefs and negative thought patterns, it is not
brainwashing or manipulation. Brainwashing requires
entrenchment with deprivation. In order for the new "programs"
presented during hypnosis to be effective you must agree to them as
an act of your own will.
Q: Do I ever give up my will to the hypnotist, or lose control during trance? A: No. You do not surrender your will to the hypnotist, nor anyone else, during trance. The ego is never completely "shut off" or dissociated during hypnosis. You gain personal control through the power of your subconscious mind by accepting expansive and healing ways of thinking and taking positive action as your conscious and subconscious mind come into alignment. Again, it is all up to you to decide what you will accept or reject during trance. While the critical faculty (part of the conscious mind) is relaxed during trance, it is never completely eliminated. Therefore, you can still choose what suggestions or new ideas you will accept or reject while in hypnosis.
Q: Can I get "stuck" in trance? A: No. If left alone while in trance you would either fall asleep and wake up naturally, or bring yourself out of trance yourself. You have the ability to terminate trance anytime you choose.
Q: Does hypnosis make people tell the truth? A: No. Hypnosis is not a truth serum When in trance one can edit, withhold, or lie. The ability to choose what to say while in trance is maintained.
Q. What is the cost for private sessions? A. We bill by the session, rather than the hour, so you know exactly what each session will cost up front. This makes our rates very competitive, as most hypnotherapists in the Denver area charge for the time used at much higher rates. Regular private sessions are $125. The first session lasts about 2 hours and costs $175 and includes a self-hypnosis training CD. Regular sessions are typically from 45 to 90 minutes in length. Check the Rates page for more details.
